The EgyptAir flight company started releasing a statement confirming that the MS181 flight "is officially hijacked".

The plane was originally travelling from Alexandria to Cairo and was forced to land at Larnaca airport in Cyprus. The plane was travelling with 60 passengers and 7 crew members on board.

According to the Associated press, the flight attendant Nihal el-Barqouqi played a role in convincing the hijacker to free the passengers once they landed in Cyprus.

The man, now identified by Egyptian and Cypriot authorities as Seif Eddin Mustafa, surrendered to the authorities peacefully a few hours later.

According to the Cyprus Foreign Ministry, the explosive belt was, in fact, a set of mobile phone boxes attached with wires to make it look like a bomb. Apparently the causes behind the hijack had to do with a female partner who lives in Cyprus.

In this video, the suspected EgyptAir hijacker Seif Eldin Mustafa is seen going through security at Borg El Arab Airport in Alexandria, Egypt.
